Why I favor 2D over 3D

Tue Mar 31, 2009, 1:32 PM
::Incoming giant rant!::

Ok now first off I want everyone to understand I love and appreciate all forms of art. 2d, 3d, and all styles.

warning of potential spoilers for Monster vs aliens (but not much)

So i went to see monsters vs aliens by dreamsworks. over all. not bad. I got laughs. the style of a lot of the characters was real fun as well. how ever the second half of the movie left me feeling empty. it was today when i truly realized the main flaw in 3d for me. people take too much comfort in the tools of 3D and in the end the worlds of their products always feel flat to me.

allow me to explain. reason why majority of animation are 3D now a days is because it saves time and resources over 2d. draw a charcter frame by frame for every second. or just simply build a character and tell it to go from point A to point B. 3d saves a lot of time. how ever the modeling process still requires a lot of work. this leads to 3D's main flaw. . . "THE WORLD"
in 3d you will not model a character who is only gonna appear for only 5 seconds. you either pump out a generic model that looks like everyone else or just cut it out period. if you take time to model every single detail youd be better off 2d for all the short temporary stuff. This then flattens your world

in Monsters vs aliens the first half was fine. you had susan (Ginormica)interacting with all these people. she would accidentally step or smash some one and a joke would be told. you felt the world around her as it interacted with her. even something as small as the character in the movie who scans all his body parts just to get through the door. this guy only appeared for a few seconds and all he did was setup the next joke. BUT THATS GOOD! i didnt feel alone. there was a world going on around me.
Then we get to this GIGANTIC beautiful alien space ship. its huge and its all inhabbited by one (Mind you ONE!) alien. . .
thats it? this huge ship and all you give me is one alien? no chrony? no side kick? no nothing? and when he finally does populate the ship. they are all clones exactly the same model as him! where did the world go that i was so into a few minutes ago?

the same thing in pixars incredibles! I loved the incredibles! but the second half was so flat? they had one bad guy and an army of generic soldiers that look exactly the same as each other. the villian had a whole army but he was the only focus. I felt nothing for the world around them. and when the giant robot attacked the city you only had maybe 7 people int he city. . . It's a city! those streets should br crowded and in a panic!

i know it takes time but you need the small people in the world to bring your world to life. even if only for a few seconds you need that one individual modeled and animated to show me there is a world outside these main charcaters. otherwise you really flatten your animation. . . this doesnt just hinder the animation for me. it hinders the story. what worth is a world saving with no people in it?

either take the time and build a few extra characters or just go back to 2D. I dont want any more flat animations =/

on a side Note. I love Hugh laury! you knwo why? because no matter what role he plays. I never know its him!

Dont Be Shy

Fri Jul 11, 2008, 10:49 PM
So this may sound stupid but just wanted to put it out there. I have been getting better at updating my gallery. I want to get into the art "Community" more. Trades, collabs, comissions, what ever. So I want to make some friends here at DA. So when you stop by my gallery. say hello. Comment on my works (I know alot of you who fave my pieces never say anything) I VERY MUCH welcome critiques. My biggest thing here is to learn. I dont want to depend on my school to much. I want to diverse myself.

So come on in.
Be Polite
Be Rude
Bring up my spirits
Or Crush my dreams.

Just say something!!!!!

Requesting Animation info

Tue Jun 10, 2008, 8:54 AM
So for anyone who reads this I would like to ask.

Is the animation field the right field for me? A lot of people in my school have dropped out from animation cause they said its either 2 hard or they lack the motivation. This is not the case with me. I know animation is what I want to do. I could switch to game design and still be happy. But I want to animate.

My problem is that i'm under the impression most animation is done by people across seas. Korea is the name I think pops up the most. so why spend all this time and money being in a field that I'm going to loose my job to people who will do it for half the price across the ocean?

now I know big companies like Dreamworks and Pixar employ American animators (I think). only problem with that is, one I'd be lucky as hell to land a job like that considering how competitive the field is and secondly, they are all primarily 3d animation. I do Love me some pixar and some 3d animations But I want to work in 2D.

and I want to tell stories. I don't wanna do cheap 30 second commercials.

So any enlightenment on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
